When do I plant tulip bubs?

I was giving a tulip plant as a gift, it has died but I’m waiting to plant the bulbs outside. When is a good time to do that?

tulips usually go in ground in Fall. don't remove dead leaves. just let soil get completely dry, remove from soil put in brown paper bag, keep in dry dark cool place until this fall then plant them in ground, when they begin to grow next year remove the dead leaves/stalk if it's still there after winter. Forced bulbs use so much energy that they rarely rebloom but it is worth a try for sure.I would save them & if you want some glorious flowers to plant now for all summer color and glorious fragrance get some Freesia bulbs

Hello Laura. When to plant bulbs depends on when they bloom. Spring blooming bulbs should be planted in September or October when the soil temperatures have cooled. Summer blooming bulbs are best planted in the Spring after all danger of frost has passed. Unfortunately tulips are Spring blooming. I would still plant them and hope for the best. Snip off any dead foliage first. And plant them at least 8 inches down with the roots pointed down. Good luck Laura.

Bulbed plants should be put in the soil, top end up, in the early fall or very late summer (Sept for most areas probably, some could be later in deep South or a little earlier in Rocky Mt. west for example). Tulips are so special, I hope you have good luck with them. We live in a dry area, so we mulch ours with nonbug attracting mulch (cypress or cedar chips).
