As a wood worker for over 40 years I have used Bondo for wood repairs mand have had no problems. It is much cheaper than epoxy based products. It is polyester based. Car body metal expands and contracts with temp changes also. Even more than wood does.

I have used Bondo and it is a bit more difficult to work with than wood filler, but the end result is much better. You can sand it down and shape it and bondo works great.

Pictures would help but generally you just add bond then sand away excess.
