You can go and buy a laminate to go over the top if it is just the top that is damaged.
Google d-c-fix self-adhesive vinyl. I've gotten the best price from Home Depot. It is like contact paper only a little heavier. It comes in 17" and 26" w x 78"L. I used the Granite Beige (which used to be 'brown' and they look the same) and we love it. I got those glass counter protectors -large ones for each side of the sink and smaller ones for each side of the stove. You will need to be alone in the house when you do it and several hours. For mine I got the 26" and it took two rolls for total of $33. The 26" still leaves a a small strip along the top of the counter that you have left to cover. My husband was shocked silly when he got home and saw it first thing when he came in the door. It is so pretty and NOTHING shows on it. You have to feel to see if something is on it. Good luck. You will love whatever you do. Enjoy!
Countertop vinyl! It's inexpensive, easy to install, and comes right off if you want to change it. https://amzn.to/2HOsQkm
There are paint kits for plastic laminate tops that have a binding primer. They can be tinted any color.
I would use two colors and a faux sponge roller, as it’s more forgiving.
