Have you tried cleaning it well? Mother used to have some slip covers that looked sort of like light bedspreads....they were square and she sort of draped and tucked them around her furniture.

Hi Michele, have you thought about painting your recliner? Here's a video of a person who did just that. I'm trying to get my nerve up to do a recliner. There are several posts on Hometalk with examples as well. Seems that might be the best, least expensive option for your recliner.

Buy a ready-made slipcover from SureFit.com. They do an OK job of making an old chair look nicer and aren't very expensive.
I used chalk paint on an old wing back chair and it turned out amazing.
You can also look at furniture cover/protectors, they cover the back, seat and arms, don't cover the whole chair, but since that is usually where the stains/wear are, it works good. Amazon, Wal-Mart n others have them for about $20.00. Look up furniture protectors.
Go with the paint. Cheapest way to go with great results. A lot of people are doing it. The quality and types of modern paints allow it to be done.
I went to my local thrift store and purchased a beautiful twin size bedspread for less than $15. I then draped this over my own recliner. It works great and if it gets dirty all I have to do is toss it in the washer to clean it.
Paint it. Look on Pinterest for instructions and what kind of paint to use
