With a trash box to see how much you can throw away. When you walk into the room, turn toward the right and start there. Set a timer for an hour or maybe start with just 15 minutes and then take a break.
Hi Phyllis - This is one of my favorite articles on cleaning, organizing and decluttering. It really breaks down the steps of the process, and even includes an interview with TV show Hoarders star Matt Paxton. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

Decluttering is life changing. Look into KonMari, watch Tidying Up on Netflix if you have it. Her method is to keep only what you love, which feels like a gift instead of a punishment. Start with stuff that you're not emotionally attached to. For me it was the pantry. After trying many types of diets, I was left with a pantry full of food that I didn't want to eat. Donate what you can and throw away the rest.
I work best by removing everything from the room. Put it in boxes and don't even try to sort. Stack the boxes somewhere else. Then clean the room and get furniture where you want it. Go through each box one by one and really try to get rid of as much as you can. If it doesn't fit, get rid of it or get rid of something else so it does fit. Then move on to the next room.
For smaller areas, I will gather all like items (similar to KonMari) and then decide what I want to keep and what I want to get rid of.
I just opened my closet doors and started taking things out, now they are all packed up and ready to go to the Seniors Activity Centre for their garage sale
