Ammonia removes wax.
Use wax stripper
Wax stripper.
There are many wax strippers on the market, but I always liked PineSol or Mr. Clean. We don’t use real wax anymore but we do use laminate floor cleaner for all our laminate floors. Laminate is so much easier on one’s back and legs with arthritis and varicose veins. It’s worth considering.
Tracey just make sure the stripper is for wood. Vinegar in water can strip of light coats of wax.

I prefer ice to getting it warm, anything warm makes it smear. Then scrape it with a knife.
