What type of vacuum cleaner do you have? I also have rubber "brushes" that work extremely well. I purchased mine off HSN or QVC years ago, but they sell similar products at any well stocked pet shop. Need a photo?

Sounds weird, but you can pick up lots by dragging a rubber squeegee over the carpet - or wearing a rubber glove to grab the fur.
Rubber is the best way I've found on cat hair. I had a rubber brush for upholstery and a rubber broom for flooring. Worked great.
attach an old mop handle to a window squeegee, and use the rubber blade to rake up the pet hair. Once most of the pet hairhas been removed, vacuum the carpet thoroughly to get the rest.
