Lay it on its side, Flatten the bottom so it sits well. Use a hole saw bit to make holes in top, dig out the wood in holes once drilled.

Remember that sitting water is the enemy of succulents so make sure you have a way to drain. Maybe sit the logs on rock base?

Mark the log with an oblong and chisel the piece out. It might help if you use a hand drill to give you a start.
