How can I get rid of trumpet vine that has become invasive?
and comes up all over my yard including my rose garden?
Linda, hello. We have these and they are pretty but a pain. The only we can control them
is to dig up at the root.
They grow in the grass near the tree so we keep it cut.
Mid you want it completely gone you would have to cut the tree down and till
the soil. I bet some would pop back up.
Good luck!
These are horrible plants! They’ve been know to bust up foundations and crack swimming pools! Here are some Natural /Organic Remedies to get rid of invasive Trumpet Vines: 1. Dig up the roots! 2. If that’s not an option cut the plant down to ground level & pour boiling water around the base of the plant.
With the scare of Roundup, this is the best solution we can find. If the weeds are in your lawn, the vinegar/salt solutions will also kill the grass. This will not if you follow the instructions. I cannot guarantee this is as harmless as vinegar, but it is certainly much safer than roundup!! We use it. Hope this helps, Ilona. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RYe2HeOcQI
Yup I know three things. 1) they are a pain to get rid of. 2) People seem to be terrified of Roundup, and I understand why. 3) This method takes time but seems to have worked for me.
Ok now that is out of the way, 1) Cut the main stems of the vine off about 6 inches above the ground, make sure you leave a flat top. 2) Bore some 1/2 diameter holes in the top of the stump and fill each hole with a roundup solution. 3) Cover with a plastic bag to keep things from getting exposed to the roundup. 4) Repeat with every other stem. 5) Cut off any sprout you find, leave about 3 inches above the surface and paint the cut with roundup.
This will eventually work but you have to check regularly and keep at it, and it may take a couple of years.
