Its better to just buy a fly trap form Home Depot. My mom tried that a few years ago. it didn't do anything.

Fill a plastic bag half way with water and add 4-5 pennies. Hang up near the area where you want to keep flies away.
Ziplock bags or glass jars filled with water will cause flies to flee. As they approach they see an enlarged image of themselves and it scares them off. I've never added the pennies.
