You really need to read up on the life cycle of fleas. You can deter fleas from your dog, but one female flea can lay hundreds of eggs in her lifespan. As much as I hate to give my dogs chemicals and the cost of flea medication has skyrocketed, do you dog and yourself a favor and get a vet approved product like Advantage or Sentinel. The only other way to get fleas off of you dog is to get a flea comb and that requires combing from tip to tail more than once a day and depositing the fleas, before they jump off of the comb (which is a feat in itself) into a solution to kill them. If the dog goes back into the yard they simply can pick up more fleas. Mice, chipmunks, squirrels and rabbits all can get fleas and it is just a vicious cycle.
You can give your dog a bath using a little dawn dish detergent, but beware it drys their skin out. Your best bet is flea and tic repellent from your vet. I hated giving this to my fur baby, but it's pretty much the only option to keep them tic and flea free.
Many remedies out there. Most are a waste of time. Get educated, Google or speak to your vet. You not only need to treat your dog(s), you need to clean your house from top to bottom and treat the yard. Here are some sites to get you started!

Luckily I live in an extremely dry climate, so that does help with fleas and ticks. I have 3 dogs, 6 cats, a canary and a dragon, plus 3 neighbor dogs and visiting pets. None have any vermin. They get brushed and bathed regularly, the yard gets treated and it makes a huge difference. Their bedding gets washed once a week at least.
