How do I repair this wood-damaged table?
It’s wood and tile. The inset that looks like wood is veneer. It looks like the veneer has had water damage. Rest of the table wood and slate is in good shape. Any ideas would be super appreciated. It’s a beautiful table otherwise.

strip the varnish/poly off the veneer (citri-strip is good) and use gel stain to restain it.
It just looks used and unkept. Sand or strip off old finish and refinish or paint. If it were me I'd paint with oil based paint for durability. Prime first with oil based primer.
Sand the inset with 220 grit sand paper. Try to get a matching stain. Seal with three coats of a water based matte finish polyurethane.
It looks like it's been used outdoors. I'd strip the wood with Citri Strip and carefully sand to see if the wood continues to splinter. If so, you'll have to live with it or try to do some wood filler and sand smooth. At that point, paint is the best option.
If you can strip and sand smooth without any issues, you can stain it. Whatever your choice, seal it well. Also use stone cleaner on the slate and you can get a stone sealer as well.
Take this photo to the paint department at your home improvement store and ask their sales pros for suggestions on materials, application tools and finishes. They have the best materials for this project to save you time and money.
You could do a couple things. Sand and gel stain just the veneer taping off the tile and keeping as is. I think a gray would be better than the brown. You could also paint the entire thing using chalk paint or head to the paint store and get a recommended primer and paint. Both paint options would require a very good sealer with several coats. You can paint each area wood and tile two different colors or the same if you want less design. Lastly if you’ve ever seen them do stencils on tile floors you could add that dimension to it as well. Lots of choices.
For an easy fix, you can sand it smooth and then paint. For another easy fix that looks like wood stain, you can sand it smooth and use gel stain on all of the veneer. For the best looking way, you can lightly sand the veneer down (be careful to not go through the veneer), and then stain all of the wood.
You can use liquid sandpaper to strip that veneer finish and re-paint or stain. There are lots of posts here that can help you also:

I would slightly re-send it and apply a new coat of stain or paint
