Kitchen cabinets get a lot of use and need to be scrub-able.
Try chalk paint. I made mine using 1 cup paint, 1/3 cup each of plaster of Paris and water. Clean cabinets well removing all grease. No sanding or prep besides cleaning necessary. No brush strokes show but might need more than one coat to cover. Dried in 30 minutes. Wait a day then apply polyurethane. You can pick any color of paint.

Hi ! I had 1970's builder grade oak cabinets with ugly scalloped insets ., In the retirement home we bought . We had so many projects in all the rooms to bring it out of the 70's . We were doing each room , one by one . I couldn't wait until we were going to get to the kitchen , so I did my own redo until I could afford new cabinets and countertops . I measured and cut beadboard to cover the area of the door fronts and glued it down with locktite super glue . Then painted them ! It worked GREAT ! It's been almost 3 years and they have held up great . You can see my step by step tutorial on this site , called New kitchen on a budget . Good luck !
