How can I make a side table for a recliner?

Our new recliners are not wall-huggers and I hate how they sit so far out into the room. Also, anything on a regular side table is behind you if you are not reclining. Any ideas on how to build side tables that also make use of the wasted space behind them?

What about making a longer end table that is big enough to cover the side of the recliner when you're reclined and when you are sitting up?

I like this idea. I'm still searching for a swing arm type of lamp that I can fold back to a "normal" position when not in use and pull forward when I need the light not to be behind me.

This might be a good place to start. Thanks!

A console type table at the right height would be my first choice. They are much longer.

I'm thinking of making something like you suggested with a higher section at the wall end to help conceal the empty space behind the chairs so it doesn't look like they are sitting in the middle of the room. Love the chairs for their comfort, but design-wise they are a challenge.

    Hi Ann,

I agree with the others that a console table will fill the area nicely. One more idea would be to bring your tables forward and put a faux tree behind the them in the blank space. That can also contribute to the decorations in your room. You'll have to decide if it's the right look for you and for your room. Wishing you the best.

Ann...You can use flat top suitcases, paint and stack!

  • Stacked wood crates from the craft store?

That's my current solution (I love crates for a mulitude of uses!) but they don't fill in the gaping space behind the chairs. I'm thinking of adding a long wall shelf that would sit just above the top of the chair backs to block view of empty space behind the chairs.

    Hello Ann,

Had you thought of a Trolley Tab (Tea trolley) you could sit on end to serve the whole area?

  • What about tables on casters? You could wheel the tables around as needed. Adding a pair of locking casters to each will keep them in place.

I had thought of that too and still might try it. I'd need to find something that rolls easily on carpet and take care that the table lamps don't topple when moving.

I know what you mean about having recliners that must be away from the wall. At one time I had reclining chairs called wall huggers and I loved them. Well, not now. The only solution I have for my reclining chairs is to put them in a corner which depends on your room arrangement and I use either a chair side table (narrower then a regular end table but the same depth but good for a lamp). I have seen tables like garden stools for beside reclining chairs and a floor lamp behind them. Also the one someone recommended, the "C" table. A tall plant could be used to conceal the space. Frustrating to try to find something to cover up the space or at least it is for me.
