How can I replace wicker with wood for a chair seat?
Loving the stools! We have more squarish seats in our kitchen chairs, they have like wicker in bottom now but needs replacing, any ideas for a cheap wood hack?

The furniture is original to a beach condo. Still in good shape but top is scratched and glass definitely requires upkeep. Thanks

Yes that is exactly what I would do that Cheryl suggested. I have a wicker seat on a stool as well and inevitably the wicker is breaking. I don't know if my kids have made it worse by pulling on it but the weaving is done and broken. Cut a piece of plywood the size of the seat and follow her youtube directions for upholstery. You will need to attach that upholstered piece to the stool structure when done and you can use angle brackets secured tightly. Good luck
Hi Martha, If you are able (and don't want to replace the wicker) have a piece of thin plywood cut to match the chair seat. You can then cover it and have padded seats without having the costly expense of replacing wicker.

Wood panels are seen on a lot of projects. It’s likely the most cost effective choice. One time I removed a woven rush seat and used thrift store belts to make a one of a kind leather woven seat.
Martha..Can you send a picture of one of the chairs so we can get a better idea? Thanks
Plywood panels can do the job.
I have covered plywood seats with foam and fabric or if you are left with just a square frame for a seat you can weave a seat easily using old belts or neck ties.
Hello Martha,
Place a piece of paper or Fabric on the underside of the chair and cut out a template for the chairs. You can get Woven Wicker Can by the Foot at Craft shops,or buy enough plywood or MDF to replace the seats in the chairs cover with foam and fabric or paint as require Best wishes. Craft shop should be able to sell you a book about recaning or reupholstering chairs.
Best wishes.
Hi Martha, I had a bentwood rocker and the wicker seat broke, my husband picked up a piece of plywood and cut it to shape to fit where the wicker was, we painted it to match it worked better than the wicker and was still very comfortable. He used a jig saw to cut the shape exact

Turn Upholstered Dining Chair Seats Into Wood!
Cheryl's tutorial helped me too.
I did precisely what Cheryl suggested, following that tutorial on Youtube with our outdoor chairs. The chairs became new ones, and no significant change could be seen, but my husband did not like it. He insisted that we have to buy new chairs, and use them as a spare when we have many guests. The idea is that we renovated the terrace a bit, and once we found some beautiful chairs at a reasonable price on https://abideinteriors.com.au/product-category/outdoor/outdoor-dining-chairs/ then maybe it's worth it to change them. They are already over seven years old.
