Hello Linda,
You could wipe it over with liquid Shoe polish or with Scratch Cover, or Decoupage the top with paper or Fabric, or Cover it with Contact paper or Stencil it or stick on tile covers or Paint it with Chalk paint and then Seal it with Clear or antique wax. Hope the suggestions are of help to you!

In order to keep the wood, try mineral spirits to lift off the old polish and grime. Here's a link that shows the process:

If you're up for painting it, you can lightly sand it, wipe it clean, and then use chalk paint. Great stuff and easy to use. You can see an example of it here - https://chascrazycreations.com/upcycled-thrift-store-heart-table/
I love Fusion mineral paint for this sort of project - no sanding required and the colors are fabulous. You can find it locally and here: https://amzn.to/2DTHILi
The easiest way to refinish without stripping is to use chalk paint. Apply as directed on the can.
You can scuff with fine steel wool then clean with denatured alcohol. Then you are ready to prime and paint.
If you don't want to paint, you could add a glaze or antique it.
