Hi Jody, there's quite a few Hometalk projects about this over here...

You could paint them or if they are natural wood, refinish them. Natural wood has a beauty in the grains of it that is truly gorgeous when the stain enhances it.
Do you have a picture of them you can share?
Here's a makeover (or two) that I like:

You could beef up the trim if needed. Plus a fresh coat of paint or stain and rearranging the items on the shelves would make them seem like new.

A new color paint can do wonders to make your bookcases look different. OR, sometimes just emptying the entire bookcase out and rethinking what's on them can make a difference. Rearrange the books, stack some of them horizontally, add other decorative items including a plant or two. Look at magazines that show bookcases similar to yours and copy the ideas. Baskets the size that will fit on shelves are a good way to store like items and can be very eye-peasing as well.
Hi Jody. I'm Cindy. Paint gives you the biggest bang for your buck. You could also put wall paper on the back surface for an updated look. If there is a lot of different patterns already in the room, then go with a neutral wall paper. If your room is neutral, then go with a print to liven things up. You could always bring in additional color with art, rugs, or pillows.
Very helpful thank you
Hi Jody -
Give the book cases a new coat of paint, plus the wall in the back. You can also refresh the books (donate what you don't want any more) and use a few shelves for some cute styling.
Hubby and one of his pals decided to take on the project to build these built-in book cases. You can see the before and after and DIY. Hometalk even featured it. Hope this helps with some inspiration! Hugs, Holly
