Hi Carol! What kind of metal are you cleaning? A little warm vinegar and 0000 grit steel wool will clean brass nicely and make it look brand new!

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR OVEN WITH BAKING SODA & VINEGAR!
Wipe first with soapy water then spray with warm white vinegar to dampen. Then sprinkle with baking soda. Rinse with a sponge, add baking soda as needed to scrub area. Rinse well with warm water. Dry with a soft cloth.
I use this method to clean old paint and varnish from furniture hardware. Remove the hardware and put it in an old pot on the stove. Add a tablespoon on baking soda and simmer for 30 minutes and all the paint and dirt just wipes off.

If you're cleaning stainless I would use Cerama Bryte, it does a great job and no messy mixing.
