Hello
Proper prep can yield a successful job. After walls are clean —prime and paint.
We have a log cabin and too much wood is dark and dreary.
We are quite pleased the previous homeowner placed paneling over natural cedar logs in two bedrooms and painted it a light color. I would suggest not to hesitate to your paint paneling for a room brightening update. Our paneling grooves are not filled and I feel its a huge improvement.
I think you’ll be really pleased with your results. Best wishes in your painting adventure!

Clean with TSP, prime with Kilz Original, then 2 coats of a good primer. I did this in 1995 and it still looks great.
Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Kilz. Then paint like painting regular walls. Acrilyc latex paint will work. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with non shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.

How to Paint Wood Paneling, Baseboard & Trim Without Bleed Throughs
I would suggest using a primer first. If there are ridges you might need a brush to get in the grooves.
Hello Ellie,
If the paneling has been varnished, best to rub it down a bit to get a key,and then use a suitable undercoat for the paint colour you intend using. As you are going over Dark with light you may require several coats of Undercoat to block out the dark before you use final top coat. Either use a brush and a roller or just a brush or
use "Brush Runner pro" system, for a smoother easier finish..........Best wishes.
Ellie....I used Kilz after cleaning then the paint..Did 2 coats of each. Used rollers after applying the grooves with brush. Good luck
Use a good primer and then paint!
