DYI stair treads
I have wooden stairs but they are slippery. I do not want carpet.
Can I make my own treads or should I purchase them?
Thanks

I don't see why you cant make them yourself if you have a mind to. Here are some lovely stair makeovers from other Hometalkers that might help

We bought stair treads and installed them ourselves. Affordable and they look great. Here’s what we did: https://www.frugalfamilytimes.com/2020/02/staining-stair-treads.html?m=1
Home Improvement catalog has some great replacements. You can buy rubber treads that are cut out with a great design or the also make stick on strips that you just cut to size and attach. They have a rough texture to them and you can add one or two to each step. Check Amazon, lots of options.
Those rubber treads are not expensive at all and work great. Well worth it for the safety factor, especially if the steps are normally slippery.
There are also anti-slip treads that fasten directly to the tread. These are usually used in exterior applications.
We put strips of roofing material on ours to keep them from being slippery
Thanks, everyone.
If I buy treads, should I buy them as close to the stair color as possible? Light oak color.
Yes, I'd advise matching the wood, unless you're seeking a contrast, or are not worried about maintenance.
Oak is a harder wood, and the color won't show dust as easily as would darker wood species.
Thanks, Olivia
You should purchase them because they are meant for stairs and will not cause anyone to fall down the stairs. They are inexpensive small rug pieces that are easy to apply. We change out ours often if they get dirty or frayed.
Home Depot sells the carpet pieces to go on them I have them they are great they stay clean just vacuumed
