Hi all, hope you are staying safe...?
we have a beautiful front door with a glass window surrounded by small stained glass squares. the door has at least 3 layers of paint over the beautiful stain. I would like to bring it back to the original state of the wood and re-stain it...

What have you tried so far, if any? My thought without seeing it would be to start with Citristrip. There will be sanding involved once you get all the paint off. Then you can stain. See if these sites help you!

Hope you are well and safe too! 🌞
Is there a question as to HOW to do so? Easiest way is to remove door if you have several layers of paint and use a paint stripper. I have not found one product to be much better than another and have used many different brands. After paint is removed do a final sanding with fine grit. I use a rag to stain any wood. You have total control to how much stain goes on and where. Dip lightly and spread thinly. You can always add another coat or more stain but once you have used too much you have to start all over so be sparing until you get the color you want.
Hi there, this video should help you get that old paint off - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7HfOdzHVKw
3 layers is a lot! Definitely strip it with a paint stripper. Then sand it all down, start with 180 grit or less and work your way up to 220 grit. Vac...tac cloth. Precondition the wood with a wood preconditioner so the wood accepts the stain evenly. Then use whatever stain. You will want to finish it off with a marine varnish. We tried staining our front door and because we didn't seal it with something heavy duty like that, we have had trouble. Marine Varnish comes in clear or colors. I would use your own stain and then clear marine varnish on top. Good luck. Sounds like a nice project.
I love this paint stripper https://www.amazon.com/Citristrip-QCSG801-Paint-Varnish-Stripping/dp/B07LF8T6PM/ref=sxin_7_osp30-7da76e6d_cov?ascsubtag=amzn1.osa.7da76e6d-9717-442f-8e13-2154f543f863.ATVPDKIKX0DER.en_US&creativeASIN=B07LF8T6PM&cv_ct_cx=paint+stripper&cv_ct_id=amzn1.osa.7da76e6d-9717-442f-8e13-2154f543f863.ATVPDKIKX0DER.en_US&cv_ct_pg=search&cv_ct_wn=osp-search&dchild=1&keywords=paint+stripper&linkCode=oas&pd_rd_i=B07LF8T6PM&pd_rd_r=46cdc93d-c064-4b24-abbd-dc97cae07094&pd_rd_w=SUps2&pd_rd_wg=pdT0m&pf_rd_p=ff28ffeb-0bd3-46bd-a00c-4c3cc2d00812&pf_rd_r=8HRY9ZTT67DGPRMT3QPQ&qid=1588631685&sr=1-1-32a32192-7547-4d9b-b4f8-fe31bfe05040&tag=bobvila-20
You've gotten great advice but definitely take door down and strip flat like on saw horses in the garage. This is not a one day project. Will take several days. Use Marine Varnish as your final clear coat. 3 coats is recommended for the outdoor side. Regular varnish ok for interior.
I would strip the door, sand it lightly, prime it and then paint it with a couple coats. Definitely not a one day job, I'd split it up over a few days... maybe on the long Memorial Day weekend. :)
Citristrip is a good stripper that isn't very harsh. Then you can sand or use steel wool to smooth it out. Clean with TSP or denatured alcohol.
I did that I sanded mine down but you could remove the paint with remover you would leave it on then scrape it off
I would strip the paint with Citristrip and then sand it. If the panel of glass is removable, I would store it while working on the wood. Not possible? Protect it with clear plastic and painter's tape. Working on a horizontal (flat) surface is always easier, but, the door can be refinished where it is, although it will be more difficult and time consuming. Good luck and stay safe!
