Geometric Tortoise
Crafting with lolly sticks is on-trend! Create geometric shapes with these simple wooden sticks to make animals, flowers or other shapes. Set out a pattern, trim the sticks to size and glue them together to create the most fantastic decorations. As a finishing touch, you can even paint your craft piece in your favourite colour.
Start by making the torso of the tortoise using whole lolly sticks. This will form the basis for the subsequent steps. Have the sticks overlap a little so that they can be glued together using a glue gun.
Craft or other scissors or secateurs can be used to trim the sticks to size. Attach half-sticks at the ‘joints’ on the torso, trimming the sticks in between to size with the scissors and sticking everything down.
For the inner of the shell, create a hexagon of sticks and attach two more hexagons made out of shorter sticks to it.
Once the hexagons have been combined, they can be linked to the rest of the shell with appropriate-length sticks.
Now create the tortoise’s head. You can even use cut-offs from the previous steps for this.
Next, build and attach the front legs to the shell.
Do the same for the hind legs.
The tortoise shape is now complete. Paint in a nice colour, applying multiple layers if necessary.
