What kind of wood?
Can anybody tell me what kind of wood this is? The “grain’ is actually raised - like a texture. I’ve never seen anything like it. It is a crèche that my grandfather made-very 60 years ago. Thanks.

it appears to be oak - oak is usually grainy looking
That might be oak. The grain may have raised over time due to moisture.
Could be oak, but I have had those raised grain in wood in the past and the wood mill told me they are caused by weather damage. They put my wood through the planer and it removed them if it is not a look you want.
Hello. That is gorgeous wood I would think it’s tiger grain oak.

That’s it! Thank you so much
I want to say it Tiger Grain, but not sure why I want to say that? Oak, I believe
I agree with others who believe it is oak. Moisture often makes the grain more prominent.
It's plywood. You can see three layers on a closeup of photo three. It's just the way the veneers were applied to give that textured look.
Look closely, its veneered.
Side profile on the edges show layers of veneer that make it engineered plywood.
It looks like oak but I think it is plywood that has weathered.
Don"T know for sure but it's looks like fir. Plywood has nothing to do with the grain.
It looks like plywood from the photo.
