Grass growing in mulch.
How can I kill grass/weeds that come through the mulch? I have grandkids with lung issues and therefore cannot use harsh products.
thanks!

Note: The thicker the quality and the more overlapping there are to the various pieces of fabric, the more effective it is going to be in preventing sprouts from poking through. You get what you pay for: flimsy paper-like cheap fabric tears and disintegrates easily.
3.Apply mulch.
Note: The cleaner the mulch and the thicker the layers are , the more effective is it going to be in keeping the fabric down and maintaining coverage
Landscape fabric or plastic under the mulch should help.

We double up on the plastic before laying our mulch. It helps considerably.
Do not use plastic sheeting. Water will puddle and can kill the plants. After cleaning up the weeds and grass I lay down newspaper on the soil with a bit of overlap. Then with a light spray of water wet it down. Then I lay down landscape fabric over the newspaper. Two to three inches of mulch on top of the landscape fabric. The darkness of the newspaper will prevent weeds and the landscape fabric allows water to drain. Over time the newspaper will decompose and the landscape fabric with the mulch takes over. Any kind of weed killer will also kill plants.

Pour boiling water on the grass it will kill the grass, be careful not to pour it on your plants. As weird as this sounds it does work.
I suggest buying industrial strength vinegar (I use 30% vinegar from an online store, ‘Factory Direct Vinegar’ after too many years of trying to organically kill weeds with grocery store 5% vinegar. Any strength of vinegar will kill whatever it touches above the ground, including grass, flowers, moss and such. The 30% vinegar doesn’t mess around, it kills a weed in about two days — especially if you dig a knife into the middle of the weed right into the soil. Apply the vinegar and you’re getting the above ground plant and into the root.
It’s work, but worth it. I would follow with the aforementioned suggestions of thick denier weed cloth and 2 - 3 inches of mulch.
Good luck!
Hello. I used landscaping fabric and newspapers.
