I'm not sure of a preventive spray but I my dad fills a paper bag with plastic bags and hangs it. It looks like a hornet's nest and keeps them away.

They are attracted to food and debris so make sure you don't have anything out, not even bird feed.

    Hello Linda,

First thought - Take your cushions in or put them away each night! Second thought - Take a large brown paper bag, blow it up like a balloon and tie it off. Hang it upside down (maybe using tape and string) This will look to a Wasp like nother Wasp Nest and they will give it a wide berth! Third idea - Use an insect patch on your person (available at Pharmacy depts. Hope that helps............

    Linda

I am sorry your granddaughter got stung. I know a hornet has a nasty sting!

If the hornet nest is there now, it would need to be removed but this is a tricky situation without getting stung. Here is info for you

Home Depot carries all sprays necessary to kill nest. There are ones for hornets and wasps that works well. You don't have to take cushions in every night, but flipping them up on edge may help. They don't come back to build another nest. You will probably have killed the ones that liked that area with the spray.

We've had to deal with nests. We waited until they were less active and then used a long reach spray so we didn't have to get too close. Make sure you have an exit strategy and protect yourself with long sleeves etc. just in case. Good luck and stay safe!

Wait until evening when they nest, then spray the nest with WD40, it coats their wings and prevents them from flying. In the meantime, I would remove the cushions of flip them daily.
