Make sliding barn door set up myself? Working with lack of a budget.

Cheers fellow Hometalkers, I am hoping that someone knows what parts I could buy myself to create a sliding barn door hardware idea I have in mind. They have all been out of my price range for 4 years now so I am turning to the people with all the great ideas as I am sure this knowledge is in more than one mind here, bwahahah. Do share, please, bwahahaa. Waiting until I have the money is not working because there is always something more important, like food!! Cheers, Linda

Hi Linda, you could always put wheels on the bottom of your door (the straight ones - not the ones that swivel) so it will roll back and forth. Then you could build a header on top of the wall you want it to "roll" across so it stands up right.

Now that is an idea that did not even cross my mind and what a brilliant solution it is in a small space. Well done! Thank you Grandma's House

I am concerned about something you said. You are having a difficult time getting enough to eat? If you qualify you should apply for food stamps. There are also organizations that provide monthly food boxes as well as churches that provide food and clothing to those in need.

      Dear Mogie,

Oh dear, I did not intend that interpretation at all. My budget is truly very strict but food is always on the table and can be stretched to meet the needs of anyone who dropped by hungry. I just do not have much in the home renovation needs department but all is quite livable. I hope I get rid of that darn pepto dismol pink soon. What a sight to wake too. Bwahahha. Thank you for taking the time to express concern and possible help if I had needed it. We all need to look out for each other as we get through the global upheaval and come out through the other side. We really can do it. Regards, Linda

Hi Linda, this video shows how to turn any door into a barn door, hope it helps you out,

  • I have seen people used doors they have found at the curb to make the barn door and then get the hardware online. Perhaps you could find the hardware in an online marketplace. Sometimes people buy them and never make the door...and just want to get rid of their kits. Worth a shot.

We purchased the hardware online for about $40, and made the doors ourself. :)

We purchased online on amazon. Take a look at some of the more popular brands because they often have warehouse deals! I believe this is the one we ordered, it is 6.5 feet. It depends on the size you need. It looks like they have a warehouse deal right now for 27.99 so that might be a steal!

Home Depot or lowes both carry the hardware you need...the casters also... We just remodeled a home and built a barn-style pocket door it was a lot of fun to do and I made the complete door, hardware and all for under 60 bucks! Good luck! Have fun!
