I recently put mulch in my flower bed. I was told that I should have put the plastic lining down first. Should I take the mulch out and lay the plastic?
I've found that simply pulling them out is best for the plants around it. I've also used vinegar to kill the grass, but keep in mind, it will also kill anything else that comes into contact with it. We also mulch the beds to discourage grass growth. Some people lay plastic down before they mulch. I've never had much luck with that.
Hi Tanya I pull it and mulch around my plants. My flower beds that are the least amount of work when it comes to weeding are full of hardy perennials that spread out - they really help keep weeds out.
The best way is to pull them by hand. There is also a product called Preen. It can be used anytime during the growing season, although Spring is the best time.
Tanya: A good layer of mulch really helps with that!
Bear in mind that mulch is not always a good idea if you have dogs. Many dogs chew on the mulch and it is chemically treated with serious consequences.
we usually pull up what we can then use a weed killer just on the weeds- there is no easy way to get rid of weeds that keep coming back
Lowes sells a mulch that prevents weeds. I usually line my flower beds with newspaper then put the mulch on top of that. The newspaper also helps smother the weeds. It is biodegradable so no worries.
Hi! I find that it is easier when you put down landscape cloth around the plantings and cover with mulch. Anything that grows around or near your plants are easy to remove and have shallow roots. Good luck and stay safe!
Hello. Most times I hand weed.
Preen might be another supportive measure.
Pull the grass up. Put down a layer of newspaper over the ground. Lightly wet it down. Then cover with landscape fabric and two to three inches of mulch. I just did this to two flower beds

Depending upon your grass type, those stolons may spread as much as 4-6" underground. Once you've removed the grass, install a deep metal divider to prevent the grass re-growing into the flower beds. Applying a liberal dose of Preen 3-4x during the growing season and mulching the flower beds with 3-4" of mulch should help.
If you have or can borrow a small rototiller, that’ll save you from pulling. Then cover with landscape cloth or newspaper and mulch.
Hard work, but pull all the grass out. Then lay several layers of newspapers or a layer of cardboard between your plants, then cover with landscape cloth. Without light nothing will grow back for quite some time. Eventually the wind will probably blow weeds/seeds back in but for a full season or two the grass should be gone!
