How to keep artificial flowers from flying out of planters?
I have window boxes I fill w/ artificial geraniums. Every time the wind blows, I'm picking up a couple bunches of flowers in my yard. I stick them in the dirt that's already in the box. Any suggestions?

Jackie: go to your local Home Depot or Lowes and pick up a big bag of rocks! (not pea gravel). ...use those instead.
Hi Jackie. Try putting some floral foam in your window boxes. Then stick your artificial flowers in the floral foam. You can put some moss on top to make it look pretty. Good luck Jackie.
I would use foam to stick the stems in and then cover them with some small stones to keep the foam from flying out.
I often use a drop or two of glue to affix artificial flowers or greenery to outside decorations. Others suggested foam for the base, but, if you want dirt, why don't you dig some of it out, place the base for the flowers (something you can glue them in to, floral foam or something you can repurpose like an upside down egg carton) in the flower box, after gluing the stems, cover it with dirt that you temporarily removed. You could weigh down the base with a few rocks for additional weight. Between the glued stems, the rocks and dirt, you should be able to keep them in place. Good luck and stay safe!
I agree with Cindy floral foam will give the flowers some stability.
Glue floral foam to your box the place fowers,
Depending on how heavy the window boxes are, and how sturdy the hardware is that mounts them on to the house, adding rocks may make them too heavy for the existing hardware, and they may fall off the wall.
Here's an alternate way of anchoring the flowers down:
- wrap wire around the stem of each flower leaving a long straight tail at the bottom of each stem.
-poke part of the stem, and the wire tail all the way down through the foam
-push the wire back up into the styrofoam, forming a u bend at the bottom
-reinsert the whole piece of styrofoam back into the box
-if the styrofoam lifts up in the wind, put a few dabs of crazy glue on the bottom to help adhere it to the bottom of the box
-This works best with wire that is a stiff enough gauge to poke through the styrofoam without having it bend, and with styrofoam that is dense, and fits tightly in the flowerbox.
Glue them down
Wire the stems and then twist the wire around a stick or similar in the bottom of the post to anchor it, before adding the soil back in
Add florist foam and stick them in there. You can cover with dirt if you don't want to see the foam.
