How tO make bed base , easiest way never made anything before.
my bedroom is only small, I can take up to 4ft for width, Which I believe is a small double. The problem I am having is that the length is restricted to 5ft 5in because skirting board very thick.
is it possible to buy normal size base and alter it, or can I make one from start. I appreciate any ideas on this

Hi Valerie, it is generally possible to buy a bed base (depending on what its made of) and alter it. Here is how I built mine: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/furniture/build-your-own-platform-bed-frame-diy-27819376 It was pretty simple with a frame and supports made out of 2x6s and 3/4" plywood put on top.

Measure your mattress to see the measurements you have to work with. Don't measure the space for the headboard or foot board....headboard can be fastened to the wall and a foot board is not necessary. Then check to see the cost of a metal frame....they are not too expensive and may be the best and easiest and most are adjustable. If you want to make a wood base, I am sure there are directions for doing that. Try google or u-tube. This Old House could have something like that also.
When you ask about a bed base do you mean box springs or do mean a bed frame?

If the length is restricted, how is the mattress going to fit? Maybe some pictures and measurements to give a better idea?

Easiest way would be to use 2 Ikea Kallax bookcases, and a sheet of plywood. No nails or screws, easy to move..... only recommendations is either round the corners of the plywood or add some foam corner protectors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nui11piF_s8

You have gotten some good advice about building a wood mattress base. The metal one I mentioned can be purchased at furniture stores, mattress stores and anywhere that sells mattresses.
The folding metal ones are $100 and are going to be standard mattress sizes.
If you build one with lumber & plywood, using some of the ideas above, you can make it any size & color you want.
That way it can have storage bins under it and even a way to clamp in a lamp or an under bed phone charger.
Your measurements of double bed width are off..... Yes, full-size beds and double beds are the same thing. Both terms refer to mattresses measuring 54 inches by 75 inches. Though the word “double” would suggest that a full or double bed is twice the size of a twin/single mattress, that's not the case. A full mattress is 15” wider than a twin bed, but the same length.
