Sandy: Clean toilet weekly and this should not be a problem. In bad situations, use a pumice stone:

Do you have hard water? If so a water softener may be your answer. Other than that, I would clean the bowl often to prevent calcium deposit. A product called CLR works well.
We have really hard water and every few months, I use Coke (the soda). It works alongside a pumice stone
The good ole' pumice stone
Lyme Away is like CLR, but $1 at dollar store.
one must wear gloves and run the exhaust fan as the odor is strong.
You need a water softener in your house or once a week use Clorox cleanup and a brush that will keep it clean
Clean with a descaler. Most of them have a preventive formula that will extend the life between cleanings. I like Fuller, Norwex, and Don Aslett's kit from QVC (includes cleaner, brush, & caddy).
Hello short of installing water softeners it becomes a maintenance chore. I have found that the pumice stick is a very effective removal tool when all commercial cleaners and DIY tricks fail.

I spray my toilet down with a mixture of white vinegar, dawn and water. About a 1/4 cup of Dawn, one cup white vinegar and the rest water in a spray bottle. I use it weekly and have NO buildup any longer.
Hi! We have unbelievably hard water and cleaning once a week with Scrubbing Bubbles keeps the buildup from being a problem. Good luck!
