If you choose to try your hand at making a feather comforter, I would suggest putting it into a duvet, this would help you keep your feather comforter clean and protected.
Sometimes a duvet cover over an old comforter or thrift store find is an easy option.

It would be so much easier to make a duvet cover, have you thought of that?
That would be quite the project indeed. I agree with Debbie, it might be easier, though still a feat, to make a duvet cover.

Hi Christy, definitely making a duvet cover would be easier! You can buy a feather duvet insert for pretty cheap at some of the discount stores. Use nicer expensive fabric for the top, use sheet material for the backside. If you can sew pillows or a square, you can sew a duvet cover. It's just larger. Then you then can use velcro/loops or buttons or toggles to close the top off. Here is a tutorial:

Are you wanting to replace the inside filling of a present comforter, to make just a new cover for it, or sew an entirely new comforter from scratch?
Uou can make a duvet cover by using sheets one size larger than your comforter. I am not sure that will save you any money, but if you want to match your sheets or a certain decor, that might be the way to go. Make sure to sew ribbons on the bottom corners so you can tie cover to the comforter.
I found that a comforter is too big for my washer so ended up getting a bed spread at amazon.com and a king size fits easily into the washer. I sleep hot so a thinner spread was a good choice and the patterns and colors to choose from are almost over whelming.
