Asphault driveway with cement patch?
We have a very long asphault driveway. It was in rough shape when we bought our home. There are cracks and some potholes. Asphault patch is pretty expensive and having it redone will also be expensive. We are considering digging out the potholes and squaring them off and pouring cement in sections. I understand it may not adhere to the asphault and it will look patchy until we get the whole thing done. We can live with that. Has anyone else done this? Do you have any tips or advice? Thanks!

Why not buy asphalt patch and use that? It's available at home improvement stores.

The asphalt patch I bought was not expensive.
I also bought a lot of asphalt crack sealer in caulk tubes. Cleaning the cracks out has been tedious.
I would suggest keeping the weeds dead and pulling them out, to keep the cracks from growing.
If it is not too far gone, I would also power wash sections of it and apply an asphalt sealer. It will get you 1-2 years of protection.
A slurry coat will get you 3-5 years.
I would assume that the asphalt patching material couldn't be any more expensive than the concrete mix.
Check some local suppliers for prices. We've bought the patch material in the past and it is available at a reasonable price. The trouble with the concrete patches is they may lift out and become a hazard between rain and freezing conditions, tripping someone or damaging your cars. Good luck and stay safe!
Filling the potholes with gravel or sand might work as well
No. Home Depot sells black top in a bag put it on a day when it’s hot pack it down and the hole is patched
You can buy asphalt patch in bags at the homecenter. Can't be anymore expensive than concrete patch. Concrete will not hold to asphalt due to it being petroleum based.
I have a couple of places that washed and we put ready mix instead of asphalt patch. The homes were deep and asphalt patch just ashes away. We had no issues with it adhering and didn’t do anything special. Just mixed it up and dumped in the hole, then smoothed it.
Hi KD,
Maybe buy Patch Kit! or use Shingle over the top. I have the same problem, just finding out the cheapest way to make it look good myself! Where I live, making ugly patches would be frowned on, so may have to live with the decaying drive a little longer, until I can get it fixed properly.
My husband has patched our asphalt many times with supplies from Home Depot. It was not difficult to do and it looks great. Then he just sealed over it and the holes and cracks all disappeared. Looked like new...might be worth investigating.
Hello again,
If you want to consider Shingle on the drive. First of all fill the holes with and solid finish you can get hold of Tarmac or concrete and tamp it down to compact it. Then you purchase Shingle or Gravel in Bulk and spread it over the drive. We would need to raise an edge along the Drive on both sides to contain it and also a raised edge at front so we don't lose it onto the road. Depends on the amount and cost of the gravel etc. Could even be Cinders. You would need to have it dumped onto the drive and then rake it over .......................Best wishes.
