How do I hide old wall paper residue when painting?
Help! I need to repaint my master bedroom walls, post removing 30 year old grass cloth wall paper. Even after sanding, I can not get all of the glue residue bumps off. When doing a test painting area, the residue patterns show through. I am not a professional painter, so I need something easy to do. Thank you!

You can also try a solvent from your hardware store. It should soften the glue.

Two tone paint job, using a faux sponge roller cover. Be subtle.
If too much, then third faux sponge color mixing together paint 1 & 2.

Bottom line, if it won't come off..... I skim coat the walls with joint compound and I can complete a large room in a couple hours..... I use a 14" drywall knife to make quick work of it..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeGWbgAUvCM really upped my game using tips from this guy
Have you thought about using a texture on the walls to mask the residue? It may be the easiest.
Here's a post that might help - https://homeguides.sfgate.com/remove-wallpaper-glue-residue-41272.html#:~:text=Mix%20hot%20water%20and%20a,a%20clean%20rag%20or%20towel.
There is really no way to paint it without it showing through without removing all of the residue. The only option would be to replace the drywall.
maybe this will help

Clean with TSP and rough microfiber cloth. Prime with Bullseye 1-2-3 and then use a good paint with primer in it. Two coats. This should help to minimize it. However, your issue may be old drywall. My hallway has never been wallpapered, nothing but paint, built in the late 1950's and it has a slightly rough texture to it.
Spray your walls with Downy fabric softener. Let stand about 10 minutes, take a plastic scraper from the auto store and scrape off the residue, It works like a charm.
Hi Lisa,
Persevere and scrap it off. Otherwise, have the walls re-skimmed! Good luck!
You’re suppose to remove the glue with vinegar as you remove the paper so it do not hardened like glass....but ist too late now so the best thing to do is use hot vinager and with a roller do just about 3 feet wide at a time go over it a few time rewetting the glue and with a good scraper scrape as much as you can and wash it again if there is some feft then continue for the whole room then apply a very good primer before the paint because if there is a little bit of paste left the paint will peel off within a year you do not want to have to restart all over again

You need to sand it down or use a wallpaper remover or both.
