Make sure you start the spray off the piece and gradually move back and forth to create an even spray. If not you will get more spitting, drips and pooling when you start spraying right onto the piece. If you are spray painting wood, I would seal it with a spray sealer like polycrylic so you don't get flaking and chipping.
Hello Rat,
First, do the project in the open air or in a well ventilated room. Cover the floor with dust sheets or newspaper to save your flooring. Use the sprayer in a side to side sweeping mod, back and forth across the item, but not too close otherwise you will get runs. Practice this method, before tackling the project, so you know what you are doing !
Hope that helps.....
Some good suggestions from K. Rupp!
I would add spray in light layers to avoid drips and runs.
Spray about 8 inches from the surface and extend the spray out from the piece (don't stop at the edge) to get an even paint job.

I think it depends on what you're trying to accomplish but generally do light coats holding the spray can about 8-12" away from the piece.

Scuff with fine steel wool. Clean with TSP or denatured alcohol. Prime. Spray paint with long even strokes, making sure you do it lightly with no runs or drips.

Do you want to paint or spray a wood stain/finish?
Hello. Proper prep can yield a wonderful job. The spray paint formulations have improved so much over the years.
After cleaning, prime with Zinsser Shellac Based Bin. I find the spray can option is really easy to work with. Light spraying works best. After priming lightly sanded any rough spots down and removed the dust again.
Additionally if you’re gonna do a lot of spray painting in your future —Rustoleum in makes a comfort grip accessory for spray can attachments it is a wonderful asset to keep your hand comfortable and to get a nice performance from your spray can nozzle.

PREPARE:
Always work in a well-ventilated area. Cover the floor and nearby items with a drop cloth. Lightly scuff any glossy surfaces and wipe clean with a lint-free cloth. Use Painter’s tape to hide any surfaces you don’t want to paint.
PAINT:
Using slow, back-and-forth motions, spray paint each item with several light coats of spray paint, making sure to overlap each stroke slightly. Apply 2-3 coats of spray paint, waiting a few minutes in between each coat.
FINISH:
Let spray paint dry for approximately 1 hour before handling.
Tip: Use of 2X Ultra Cover Primer in White provides better paint coverage and color.
Use many light coats to avoid drips. Takes forever but much better results!
I'd work outside or somewhere that is ventilated. Do thin even sprays and let it dry in-between coats. Have enough cans on hand so you don't have to run back to the store.
12 inches from objects and slowly go back and forth motion.
Hi,
Shake can well, Spray 6" away from item and use a side to side method. PS Cover area in case of over spray!
