Concrete expansion joints are important for your sidewalk or driveway.
Keeping your joints watertight will prevent moisture from seeping under concrete pads and causing them to heave or sink. This post shares how to accomplish this task.
The purpose of a concrete expansion joint is to allow the pads to expand and contract (get bigger and smaller) with temperature & humidity changes.
But I have also heard of folks not putting anything in the cracks and using large bags of salt to keep weeds at bay. Just pour the salt on the crack and use a broom to work it down into the crack. Then use a hose and water this down (the water really works the salt down).
Hi Vanessa. How about a big pot with lots of different flowers. You could decorate it as the seasons change. Pumpkins and scarecrows for Halloween. Christmas could be decorated with ornaments, lights, garland, etc. Good luck Vanessa.
Do you need "neighbor" approval (a duplex)? Is purpose to "adjoin" or separate?
*Concrete blocks (utilitarian or decorative) up to porch top level, or higher with planters atop....OR...lattice (separating two porches), perhaps with climbing plant. *Assuming standard blocks will fit space between? Maybe this will give you an idea of your own????
I'd build up a type of planter whether it's with wood or concrete blocks. Be sure to check with your neighbor first.
Hello I agree with response above and suggest a planter box.
Mogie has a great idea on how to prevent problems at the ground level, here is an idea to put something there starting around your door frame and extend it on down to the base between the steps. The ideas you can come up with are limitless, this is only an example:

Make This for Your Fall Front Door!
Hi Vanessa, I would go with the pot with flowers or even vegetables in it. I am thinking that you don't want someone accidentally stepping off that sport, make it stand out with flowers!
I would fill the space to raise it up a bit with something like cement bricks and then put a beautiful plant on it.
I’d tuck a window box size planter in there.
A jasmine vine would look so pretty!! They’re extremely hardy and climb nicely/are fairly easy to train and remove! Good luck
Use scrap wood and cut and nail to the same heights as the steps. (basically fill in the area with steps that are identical to the left and right) make a base and a back piece to hold in place the same width as the gap. Put a single planter on each step or a birdhouse up top and plant below or even a plant and an antique watering can.
A window box on top of some cinder blocks would be great for a veggie garden
A narrow planter with a trellis for a vining plant to separate the two stoops would be a good idea.
I'd find some large pots and plant some flowers with trellises, etc. Maybe plant some hosts along the edges. Some decorative door mats would be cute!
Hi Vanessa, I would look for one or two tall planters and plant box woods inside. Rosemary, Lavender and conifers would also work. And if your neighbour is willing perhaps you can paint and stencil the whole concrete area in front of the stairs. Hi! ...a planter box -- filled with rosemary -- would be great! ...a welcoming fragrance and super herb!
My gut instantly said what everyone else did, planter bot. However I might be tempted to either make it from concrete so it blends in nicely with the steps or I would get a vine that will drape down and cover the planter.
