What fabric paint is best for stencil work?
I’m looking to upgrade the ugly curtains in my “new to me” tent trailer. I’m in need of a muted white to ultra light grey color to stencil four curtains. They are black out type curtains that are light forest/mossy green right now. I like the color there’s just too much of it. I don’t want to buy new curtains when I can create a stencil pattern I like and paint it on. I’m not sure where or what pain is best. Please help.

I think you should just head to a craft store and check out the fabric paints they have available there. You can ask workers there too on which brands don't fade, don't bleed, etc.

Fabric paint would be the best option which can be found at any craft store
Just beware some fabric paints leave an translucent finish meaning that if there was a pattern on the fabric that could still show thru. Make sure whatever you get you read the instructions for regarding coverage.
I would for sure inquire in your local craft store
Fabric paint should work, but as others have mentioned, the people working at your local craft store or paint store should know.
This is the brand I use when stenciling of fabric and I love it. I use a roller and it's awesome. This company makes great stuff, but you can get it on Amazon, too. https://paintapillow.com/index.php/shop-supplies-paint-a-pillow/pillow-paint.html

You can get fabric paint at Micheals. They even have spray fabric paint. But what I would do is buy ANY COLOR latex paint and add a fabric medium into it. Try liquitex fabric medium or ceramcoat textile medium. Just google these 2 products and follow the directions on the bottle to mix with paint. These 2 mediums will keep the softness in the fabric when you mix with regular paint. I love being able to use my own color especially when it comes to home decor. good luck!
Chalk paint changed my life . If you haven’t used it , it’s something to definitely consider . Lots of tutorials out there . And super easy !
Hello. I highly recommend the speedball fabric inks for cotton fabrics. I recently got a vinyl cutting machine to make stencils and I am making T-shirts using them. There is a wide range of color and they apply very nicely. They must be heat set you could use a heat gun or iron depending upon your fabric sensitivity to do the heat setting and make your project washable. The jars come in several sizes.
Here’s a link to the kit that I bought. You may wish to buy individual colors to suit your needs. Looking over reviews and Q&A’s might help determine if this is a product that you would like to use for your need. It could depend on the
type of fabric content that’s in your curtains to see if it’s a choice to consider.

I've stencilled and hand painted fabrics (tees, canvas shoes, purses, luggage, upholstered chairs, and curtains, etc) using acrylic craft paint, interior latex paint, and chalk paint. Any paint will do but be careful of heavy-duty laundering since the paint would fade slightly. I've never used fabric paint or added fabric medium. and because you are stencilling and won't be loading on heavy paint, the fabric will not be stiff with paint anyway. Any paint will work. Good luck!
I have used acrylic paint - https://chascrazycreations.com/upcycling-a-serving-tray/
