I saw an old metal wall art on marketplace for free which I felt had a lot of potential, so I decided to grab it and give it a fresh new look.

BEFORE

It was quite old and weathered with a lot of peeling paint and rust so I started by scrubbing it down with a wire brush so I would have a smooth surface to work with.

Removing the peeling paint

Once I had scrubbed it all down and there was no more paint flakes, I then cleaned it with some soapy water and then primed it with White Knight rust guard. I did 2 coats of this, leaving a few hours inbetween coats and then left it to dry overnight.

Next I gave it a light sand and then sprayed it with Rustoleum 2x ultra in the rose gold colour. I love this colour and have been really happy with the finish in other projects I have used it on.

Painting the wall art.

I did 2 coats of this, leaving a few hours inbetween to dry.

Once the paint was dry I took it inside and found a nice spot on the wall for it.

Originally I was going to have it in the bedroom but I’ve since moved it to the outdoor dining area as I had a blank wall out there that needed something.

I’m really happy with how it turned out and glad I could give it a fresh new look which will hopefully last a few more years.

I started doing something similar to this last year. Only I took the long length wise metal art decoration and spray painted it. I did not sand it down, because I wanted the unusual lumps and bumps in it, because after spray painting it and it was dry, I took metallic paint and went over it again. The various irregularities in the metal captured the metallic paint and caused it to be highlighted. Since these were long and narrow (but still ornate with scroll work) I hung it in a window in lieu of a curtain valance. I think it turned out very pretty.
