Do I just do blobs or stripes or free form? It's not like there is a top and bottom like with a dresser.

Hello are you asking about an ombre effect?
Posting a photo of your furniture might be helpful. It could give more information fir suggestions and direction for ideas.
If you use some water to wet your brush and add a little white paint to it, you should be able to blend the same color, but in a lighter shade.
Hi Ellen. It sounds like you are talking about an ombre effect. You can create an ombre effect by blending different hues of the same color. Blending is important. I recommend doing some samples until you get comfortable with this. Good luck Ellen. I hope you are well.

It would depend on the final product that you want. But I wouldn't worry about where to "stop/start". Of course, if you don't like it you can always blend more until you are happy with the final product.
You can do any of those. It depends on which way you want the shading to run.
