Posting a photo of your furniture might be helpful. It could give more information fir suggestions and direction for ideas.

If you use some water to wet your brush and add a little white paint to it, you should be able to blend the same color, but in a lighter shade.

It would depend on the final product that you want. But I wouldn't worry about where to "stop/start". Of course, if you don't like it you can always blend more until you are happy with the final product.

You can do any of those. It depends on which way you want the shading to run.
