Hi Marsha, I built this one for my bed a few years ago and It was just the cost of the wood (and the paint since I painted it but you could leave it the natural wood). Hope it helps! https://www.recreateddesigns.com/2015/12/diy-wooden-headboard/
Hi Marsha, here is how I built mine: Just a 2x6 frame covered in 3/4" plywood. It looks nice and works great and was very easy to build. https://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/furniture/build-your-own-platform-bed-frame-diy-27819376

You do a platform out of 2x6 pine for the frame and then plywood in place of a box spring. However, I purchase adjustable free standing bed frame last year that goes from twin to king so all sizes. It was only $35.

Hello Marsha,
Stack Pallets to take the mattress. Be sure they are free from splinters and nails etc.
Paint or stain or leave O 'natural.
As the cost of lumber and finishing supplies has risen dramatically during the past year, rather than building a frame from scratch, it may be more cost effective to just purchase a standard metal mattress frame.
