Recently, I learned how to cut a hole in a stainless steel kitchen sink for a tap.

You can find more easy DIY renovation home projects at my blog, The Carpenter's Daughter here.

Here's a preview of how it looked in the end.

You can often buy a stainless steel sink with the holes already cut n both sides, giving you the option to install the bowl on the left or right. They usually come with a tap hole cover, too.

This method will be showing you how to cut a hole with a metal holesaw as opposed to a hole cuter for a stainless steel sink.

First, I have my mounting piece with a hole already in it.

I lined it up where I wanted my hole and drilled a hole though it to mark the stainless steel sink.

Once I'd made my mark, I could remove it and carry on drilling through with an HSS drill bit and combi drill.

Before I moved on to the hole saw, my Dad would help by spraying with water to keep it cool.

I then started to drill with a 32mm metal holesaw. Note, it's important the hole saw is smaller than the tap's base.

Then I kept drilling. Note, it's not a quick job.

After I successfully drilled my hole, I wiped all the metal away carefully with a cloth to avoid scratching the sink or hurting myself.

It was now read to thread the tap's tails through and attach to the water mains.

Here's a pic of the tap in situ much later after we'd tiled the kitchen!
