Hi there, my best luck in the past has always been removing the hardware and then throwing it in a crock pot full of water all day. It helps shed the paint. If removing isn't an option then paint stripper will work with a lot of elbow grease. If removing the paint isn't what you're looking for but just a thorough cleaning: Take the knobs a part slowly, and take pictures as you go, use WD40 to clean each part separately before putting it back together. I hope that helps!
Hi Mary, here is a great article that tells how to do it with just ketchup! Hope it helps... https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-clean-brass/#:~:text=Simply%20rub%20a%20thin%20coat,warm%20water%20and%20buff%20dry.

You can use a crockpot, but you won't be able to use it for food afterwards. You can also use an old pot (no longer used for cooking), fill it with water, and bring to a slow boil. Place the knobs in the water. It should only take a few minutes for the paint to start coming off. If the water doesn't work, try the same process with vinegar.

You can brush on Citristrip to remove paint. Make sure you don't let it dry, that stuff is horrific to remove once it dries. It has a bonus of not with a strong odor so you can use indoors safely. Just to be on the safe side, put down plastic for drippings.
You can also remove and soak in white vinegar, if you want to go the long route.
1
Cut the paint along the edge of the hardware with a utility knife. Remove any screws with a screwdriver. Remove the hardware from the door.
2Place a crock pot liner into the crock pot.
3Fill a crock pot with water and 2 tablespoons of laundry detergent. Set the crock pot on the "High" setting.
4Place the brass hardware in the crock pot, and allow it to sit overnight.
5Turn off the crock pot, and remove the brass hardware carefully with tongs. Put on rubber gloves.
6Scrub the loosened paint from the hardware with a nylon scrub brush, working quickly before the brass cools. Work over a trash can so it can catch the paint residue.
7Pour the water from the crock pot down the drain, and throw away the crock pot liner.
8Apply brass polish to the hardware, and buff it with a cloth to restore shine to the hardware.

Brass cleaner
Since the door knobs are painted, use paint remover, acetone from the hardware store. If you are taking them off the door to clean put them in a big pot of boiling water. Boil for about 15 minutes and let sit till cool the paint will come right off.
The paint on the door knobs is probably a latex paint, there are 2 ways you could get the paint off, 1 is the boil it off either in the crockpot (put in the liner) or boil in a pan on top of the stove. The second way would be to remove the paint with a paint stripper, Citri strip is the least toxic.
Hello Mary,
Use Paint Stripper Gel. Paint it on and cover it round with Cling Film to help it work and then when you remove it it should be easy to remove paint. If it still remains, do it over again. Best wishes
Thanks so much for the information. I have been actually looking for a good cleaning company that would do everything from carpets to walls to furniture and brass knobs as well. I need one of these because I have been renting out one of my apartments and I am in the process of changing tenants at the moment and I would like to have a clean place before the house tours start. I have been asking around and also looking up online End of Tenancy Cleaning Near Me and I have came across a few different options. I have scheduled a few meetings with the company's representatives as well as asked for potential estimates. I will share my experiences as soon as I hire someone and they finish the job.
