Looking to refurbish and repaint a lamp
Hi. So I was recently looking into replacing my current bedroom lamp, but I love it so much I thought maybe some refurbishment and a paint job would breathe new life into it. Not sure where to start, though. I'm not sure what it was glazed with, so I'm wondering if someone could give me some starting points.

Hi Matt, you should have no problem at all painting your lamp. There are some great furniture paints out there now that will work beautifully on that surface (Annie Sloan, Fusion Mineral Paint, Country Chic) Give the surface a light sand (if possible) and be sure to tape off anything you don't want painted. It will likely take at least two coats of paint depending on which brand and the colour you choose. I paint lamps all the time and it is a great way to give them a few look! https://www.recreateddesigns.com/?s=lamp
It's got a great shape! You should be fine to paint it. You may want to scuff it up with sandpaper to take off the gloss and bumps and then spray it with a spray paint with primer.
I would scuff with fine steel wool and wipe down with denatured alcohol. Then you can paint it. If you want a smoother look this go round, try spray paint formulated for the composition of the lamp base.
I agree that scuff sanding so new paint has some tooth to grip to. From there, your paint options are infinite! Chalk paint will stick well and Rustoleum makes spray chalk paint if you want that matte finish. You can seal it with a matte poly sealer to protect the paint. You can even mix your own chalk paint using Plaster of Paris!
If you want more sheen, use a semi-gloss or gloss paint (even eggshell finish!). You can paint with a brush or use a spray paint. I would make this choice after perusing the "oops" colors (cheap!) what available in spray, etc. HAVE FUN!
I spray painted several lamps through the years with Rustoleum Spray paint. No need for primer. The color choices are great. I like the coverage much better than Krylon. The ones I love the best are my oil rubbed bronze lamps. The dark color with the metal looks absolutely fantastic.
Use blue paint tape to protect any area you do not want paint on. I do mine outside in a big cardboard box with the side cut out. It keeps the paint from getting on everything. Choose matt or glossy spray paint. Lowes/Home Depot have lots of beautiful colors.
I would LIGHTLY sand off loose paint. I redid mine by taking two different shades of the color I wanted and dabbed them on with a sponge. I LOVE the way it came out.

I love Rust-Oleum spray paint. Since it looks like it is ceramic, I would seal it after with polycrylic spray sealer.
Hello. I am considering doing the same thing to update my two bedroom lamps. I am considering spray paint layering versus chalk paint for my options. Hoping it to make a weathered worn color somewhat like this one below. You might first want to consider the finish and color you were looking for before deciding on the paint product. Browsing over tiles and Pinterest could be helpful. That’s where my image is from.
A good coat (or 2) of spray paint in the color of your choice is a good start.
Hello there,
Looks like an interesting task! All one colour or many colours. Use Chalk Paint and then Seal with either Clear or Antique Wax.
Give it a good clean with some TSP substitute and then spray paint it to give it an updated look.
Hi Matt, Chalk paint!! Pick your favorite color and paint away!! Hope these help you out
