You can add a glaze once you have painted. Distressing is also a popular way to age painted items. I would recommend a sanding block for distressing.

This is one way to use chalk paint on plastic pots.
Just use a small amount of chalk paint and use the "dry-brush" method to stroke small amounts of paint across the pot horizontally until you achieve the look you like. Maybe even combine a couple of different colors if you wish.
