Rice like substance?
I store my seasonal door wreaths in my basement. This year when I went to change them out, the storage box and wreaths are full of what looks like white rice. I don’t see any indication of mice, nor do I think mouse droppings would be white. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Since it's in a basement I'm wondering if it's some sort of mildew. Do you have a picture?
A photo would help. What are the wreaths decorated with? Could be seeds, pods, or the items breaking down. Could be some sort of bug larvae.
My best guess without a photo would be mildew. Wipe down with white vinegar to clean.
Sounds like bug larvae. Post a pic if you can and we can help identify
They could be insect eggs. https://animals.mom.com/insect-eggs-look-like-rice-9069.html
Might be bug eggs in the organic parts of the wreaths or seeds. The common denominator could be the styrofoam is breaking down if that is in the wreaths.
I think they are likely insect eggs: House flies, for example, lay their eggs -- clusters of 100 or so -- in garbage, sometimes in the home. Their eggs are just under 1/16 inch long, elongated like rice with blunt, rounded ends. Flea eggs and bedbug eggs look like very small -- 1/50 inch -- grains of rice.
Hi Cathy, sounds like maggots, were they moving? If not like foam balls from something made of foam? Hope this link helps you out,

I'm not sure what pest you have, but, you might want to seal them in a dark plastic bag for a month or two. Good luck!
What are the storage boxes made from? The fibers and glue in cardboard boxes combined with dust, are often an open invitation attracting insects. It is best to store seasonal decor items in clean plastic bins with lids that remain tightly closed, as they are impermeable to any insects.
If you live where there is high humidity, it is also recommended that products such as Damp Rid be placed inside the storage bins to help reduce moisture accumulation and to keep the contents dry.
