An easy home DIY project on how to replace a uPVC door handle in 2 minutes if it's broken or dated. Includes a guide on how to measuring. You can also find like how to replace a upvc door lock.

For the past few weeks, we noticed that one of the uPVC door handles (AKA PVCu), leading to the conservatory was rattling back and forth.

We assumed the UPVC door handle had broken. But with it being a bit dingy, instead of unscrewing and investigating, I simply measured for a new one to update it.

So I'm going to show you how easy changing a UPVC door handle really is! If you preferred, you could opt for a silver chrome handle, or brass. But we kept with the original powder coated white.

How to Measure UPVC Door Handles

Note, after searching online, there were two measurements I needed for my Euro multi-point lock as shown above.

  1. The centre point of the handle to the centre of the fat part of the key hole.
  2. Between the centre point of the two main screws (yes... the bottom one was always missing for some reason)
  3. For my reassurance, I also took the measurement of the width
  4. and length (to compare with others in store)
  5. It's worth noting the thickness of your door, too, but you may be able to angle grind a spindle as a last resort.

Personally, this is something I don't recommend buying online if unsure, that way you can take it back for a refund easily if you buy the wrong size.

For reference, I bought this pair of Mila Prolinea Lever Door handles in white from Screwfix. No, this is not sponsored, affiliated, nor am I trying to get in their "good books".

DIY Replacement Double Glazed Door Handles

Step by Step

First, using a screwdriver, unscrew the two large screws.

Note, you'll need it for a few seconds at least, then can replace the rest by hand easy enough.

Inspecting My Faulty Door Handle

Unbeknown to me, the circlip spring had completely snapped in half.

If you prefer to fix a door handle, for example, it matches many in your house, I recommend watching watching the video link above.

Repairing a UPVC door handle takes longer, and have been informed replacement is better, if you can!

Fitting Replacement Double Glazed Door Handles

Once I'd unscrewed the old handles and I knew the new one matched, I placed over the top, either side.

Below is where you need to press the handles towards the door to see if the existing spindle is the right length.

If not, swap for one of the shorter ones that came with the new handle.

If The Spindle Is Too Long

The quickest way to cut a spindle down is using a vice and an angle grinder. But, it's essential you wear safety goggles, etc for this.

Alternatively, the slow, steady and cheapest way is to clamp it down and cut with a hack saw.

Then, slot it back in the door, followed by the handles.

Screwing the New UPVC Door Handle Back On

The final job to do, is replace the two screws back!

Although, a bit tip here, is to try and just use a hand held screwdriver, as you can damage the screw's white powder coating.

Note, the one I used is also suitable as an exterior door handle, for, example, an entry door or back door.

And here's how new UPVC door handle fitted! It's the kind of job that I can't see where £18.99 has disappeared in the house, because it's pretty much like for like.

But at least we know it's not going to fall off any time soon!
