How do I clean grout that is 23 years old??
We are buying a house with tile in the kitchen & keeping room. The grout has discolored from use except where they used rugs. Is there a simple (easy) way to clean the grout? It looks to be in good shape. Or can we dye the grout to cover the dirty looking places? Tile is a soft beige. Thank you for your help!

Hi Jessica, you can buy grout color pens at most hardware stores. That should be the quickest way to recolor the grout. Enjoy your new home
Many grout pens are pricey for the volume of product that they contain, and unfortunately, some are not that different from white nail polish.
it is a lot of flooring so I’ll have to think about that one!
thank you!
If it's a lot of flooring, I would hire a professional to come in and clean the tile and grout. Scrubbing grout by hand is a lot of work in a big area.
This video shows how to clean the grout with baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and a toothbrush. The scrubbing will take some time, but it will work: https://youtu.be/B5Z6nfa4Sp8

I've used baking soda sprayed with peroxide and scrubbed a bit with a toothbrush. Works miracles quickly. Any paint put over dirty grout won't stick.
I have got the ultimate answer for you. But some Mapei Grout refresh. You can get it in Floor and Decor for $10 a bottle, but they have limited colors. Amazon sells it and has approximately 30 colors but is more expensive. One bottle goes a long way. This stuff is great. It has a sealer and stays clean. It is a tedious job, not hard, just need time. I used a small artist brush and toothbrush, but it is well worth the effort. I changed the color on 2 bathroom floors several years ago and they still look brand new.
You could start with a stiff bristled brush and water to loosen any dirt, from there use a half and half solution of vinegar and warm water-let it hang out there.
After that make a baking soda paste and water, spray it with vinegar and let set until the fizzing stops, scrub with a brush and rinse with water.
For moderate stains, make a paste with baking soda and peroxide.
Finally for really tough stains, use Oxyclean, be sure to read the directions on the container. I use the Dollar Tree product of of hydrogen bleach.

I use a small floor scrubber with the hard bristle head to clean grout and the tile too - spray on cleaner let it sit about 10-15 min and then use scrubber - rinse and it is done
Make sure you seal the grout after cleaning. Can't grout over old grout. Old grout would have to be removed.

Hi Jessica,
You could use neat bleach on the lines and leave to see if it works, or you could use a grout Paint, or you could renew the grout. The choice is yours. Best wishes
Clean with Lysol toilet bowl cleaner and a grout scrub brush. Then if you like the results, seal. If you don't like it, paint it. I painted mine black with exterior paint and then sealed and it has done great. You can use any color you want.
