Can I turn my sink hole into a pond?
I have a large sink hole in my front yard, can I turn it into a pond rather than fill it? It drops about 4ft and it's about 12 x 20 It's at a slope right now.

I would have it checked first to make sure it isn't going to get larger. But that sounds like a great use of the area.
Hi Tina I think that would work great actually! Its something I'm thinking about doing in my own backyard where it constantly floods. Here's some more info! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuhxAuaxWQA
Think carefully, it may just turn into a breeding place for mosquitos.
Sinkhole in Detroit Turned Into Fishing Pond by Residents

First I would make sure the sinkhole is stable, meaning no more sinking of the ground into underground caverns from soil and rock wearing away. Here's a link on how to go about this:

You might want to check with your municipality to see if you’re allowed a front yard pond - or other rules about it.
Yes I totally agree with Betsy, it best to consult the city first. The if it's all good, then you can proceed.

Indeed, as Betsy said, contact your local government first, or maybe the Army Corps of Engineers before doing anything.
I agree with the cautionary statements above and have more:
How stable is it?
The weight of the water (8 lbs per gallon) may make it worse:
12x20x4=960 cu ft of water x 62.3 lbs= 59,808 lbs!
As in, there’s something unstable about the land there and it wants to sink on its own.
Adding 59,808 lbs of water weight to it, may make it grow bigger.
Your insurance company would likely not pay for a claim.
Get the City or the County Civil Engineer out there. Or at least the head of their Building Dept., who should be a Structural Engineer or an Architect.
Just be aware that sink holes are very unstable and could very well effect any future insurance claims. Call you insurance company first to find out if this will effect you.
