New to gardening. I work a lot and need full sun, low maintenance bushes/flowers to plant. What are some good ones that don't need watered daily and make the yard look nice??

It depends so much on where you live. My suggestion is to look at the plantings that are outside the shopping malls and office buildings near you. They are guaranteed low maintenance and usually full sun. Then choose from those shrubs and grasses for your design.

I agree it really really totally depends on where you live. I would go to your locally owned nursery and tell them exactly what you're looking for. They'll have the experience in your area to get you exactly what you need :)

You can learn a lot about easy to grow, low maintenance plantings by contacting your County Extension Agent's office. They will know exactly what plants thrive in your particular area and can recommend plants to you when you telll them your needs. Their advice is free as it is a government agency.

I would take photos of areas you would like to work on to your local nursery (not Home Depot or Lowes) and they can tell you what will work in your soil, your growing zone and in shade or sun...

You could go to the library or online to find gardening ideas for beginners before you start and then you would know how to do it

  • My yard is full sun and I'm not a great gardener, but we have day lilies, million belles and petunias that thrive in our area. Hostas do ok, but sometimes get burned leaves from too much sun.

I have azaleas that are low maintenance. Also butterfly bush. You need to consult a local nursery since you didn’t mention zone and soil type. I think most need to be watered the first year to establish roots though.

  • It really depends on your planting zone so the best place to get this advice is at your local garden center. Talk to someone there about what your needs and limits are, they'll definitely point you in the right direction.

Hello. Plant recommendations always depend on your specific location and growing zone. That would determine the best plant to suggests. Most plants success depend on their hardness to geographic planting zones presenting weather conditions. This information could give us more clue to give you the best suggestions for plant success!

Additionally for the best local professional advice

I would highly suggest contacting your cooperative extension. These offices are manned by volunteer master gardeners on site there waiting to answer the communities questions that know your local situation quite well.

Master gardeners are required to volunteer back designated hours ( plus continuing education) each year to maintain MG certification -this community outreach and education is their goal.

Your county extension agent and volunteer MGs will provide specific info. Very customized to your location planting site, slope issues, wind issues, snow and ice impact, frost heave, etc.
