Remove from the damaged area and clean up. Using a smaller plastic application tool, you apply new mud with broad sweeping strokes. You want to imitate the existing pattern as best as you can.
Fill in the damaged areas with joint compound or spackling. Smooth with a sponge, rag or putty knife if it is a smooth wall. If the area is large you may have to add some backing to it like a piece of wood. Horsehair plaster usually was attached to lath strips. If the lath is missing repair it first and continue with the joint compound.

You can try applying joint compound to the mesh panel/tape covering the defect with the use of a large putty knife.
Usually you would rip that part out and sheet rock it
Hello, Depends on the damage. Use Spackle or Polyfilla if small damage, or buy book on Plastering to find out ingredients for mix. or do a course, or maybe call in a Plasterer for a better quicker and possibly less expensive answer to your problem.
Holes and imperfections in the horsehair plaster can be filled with joint compound. Larger holes can be repaired by cutting out the degraded plaster, fitting a piece of blue board in the hole, and then using plaster or joint compound to blend the repaired hole.
